Easy Homemade Dry Shampoo (Made With Pantry Items!)

We’ve all had those days when you’re in a rush or want a hair refresh, but you don’t have the time to properly wash your hair… Well, this dry shampoo is for you!

If you are someone who has the greasy hair gene, you know how hard it is to not wash your hair daily. If you are on the internet a lot, you have also heard that daily hair washes aren’t the best thing for the health of your hair, so what is the answer? Enter dry shampoo. Washing your hair without washing your hair, dry shampoo is a blend of powders that when applied to an oily scalp, will absorb any excess oils, leading to cleaner looking and feeling hair.

Dry shampoo is perfect for before or after going to the gym, if you don’t have the time to do a full shower, applied in the morning to refresh your hair after sleeping, or can be applied if you are looking for a little extra volume in your hair.

This dry shampoo is a cinch to make and will save you lots of money, time, and spare you from the commercial chemicals that are found in most big brand names. This is the ingredients list in Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Light Tones:

I don’t know about you, but the last thing I would want is to put those ingredients on my head, if you feel the same and want an alternative to the chemicals, you need to  try this homemade dry shampoo recipe.

It couldn’t be easier. Simply mix your chosen ingredients, put in a glass jar, apply with a fluffy makeup brush, and enjoy the results.

🎉Now, Let’s Get Mixing!

Ingredients:

Corn starch – Corn starch is the star of the show when it comes to making your own dry shampoo, as it absorbs the excess oils from your hair, alternatively, you can use arrowroot powder, which functions the exact same way.

Baking Soda – Baking soda neutralizes any orders that your hair may have, allowing your optional added fragrance to shine.

Cinnamon – Cinnamon has a two fold purpose, 1 it adds a light brown color that makes it easier to blend into blonde or brown hair, 2 it is a natural fragrance,(cinnamon happens to be one of my favorite scents.)

Cocoa powder – Similarly to cinnamon, unsweetened cocoa powder (you don’t want to accidentally add sugar to your hair) is used as a natural color for brown brown hair, and a natural fragrance. (If you want to smell like a cookie I recommend adding both cinnamon and cocoa powder, and even some vanilla extract or absolute.)

Activated Charcoal – If you have Jet black hair (or very dark brown), this is the add in for you. Nothing is worse than putting a lightly colored dry shampoo on black hair. It gives you a white cast and noticeably tells the world you have dry shampoo in your hair.

Left to Right – Charcoal, Cinnamon, Cocoa mixed with Corn Starch and Baking Soda

Essential oils – Essential oils are optional for the function, but add a lovely scent to your hair. If you add cinnamon or cocoa to your dry shampoo, but don’t want that to be your scent, don’t worry, the essential oils are a much stronger scent that will erase any trace of the cinnamon or cocoa. Add whatever you like, there are no bad choices. I personally like lavender, geranium, orange, rosemary, and of course cinnamon.

To make your own dry shampoo, I like to do a ratio of corn starch (or arrowroot) to baking soda of 4:1 or 1 cup of corn starch to ¼ cup baking soda as an example. And add your desired amount of color. Add less cinnamon, cocoa, or charcoal, then you think you need because when you finish working the powders into your hair it disappears (or it should.)

Tips:

1 – It’s best to apply the dry shampoo before getting dressed, so the powders don’t fall on your clothing, if you forget, fear not, dusting it off and applying a little bit of water should do the trick.

2 – As with all dried shampoos, try and avoid breathing it in when applying as the tiny particles can be irritating to the lungs.

3 – Some scalps are sensitive to baking soda, if that is you, feel free to omit, or reduce the amount.

Well there you have it! Your own homemade dry shampoo powder, free from chemicals and ingredients that you can’t pronounce! I hope you love this powder, and it saves you lots of time and money.

May God bless you and yours,
